The Medjoul date also known as Medjool, or Majhool, is a large sweet date variety (Phoenix dactylifera) from the Tafilalt region of Morocco. Medjool dates are produced in countries such as the United States, Israel, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Jordan, Palestine and Mexico The variety is planted both for harvest and for the landscape. The Medjool is a unique and distinct variety, described as “large soft fruit, with orange-yellow flesh and a rich and pleasant taste”. The introduction of the Medjool date to the Western world came when a disease nearly wiped out the date palm trees in the oases of southern Morocco, and to save the delicious fruit from extinction, eleven date palms were sent to the United States in the 1920s. Nine of the eleven palms survived and are now responsible for the millions of Medjool Dates found all over California and in many parts of Arizona and the world
